TOP 10 Shows: Mental Health

and other human struggles…

As a therapist, I am loving how “popular” mental health issues have become in the media, especially on some of the most powerful television shows out right now. In addition, the media is also tackling issues such as sexuality and gender identity--finally! This is such a great way to help de-stigmatize these issues...but sometimes popular shows miss the mark on how they portray common struggles of the human being. Here is my personal TOP 10 list of shows that properly address mental health, addiction, and other human struggles:

  1. Bojack Horseman: Depression, anxiety,  addiction, codependency, narcissism. Basically, this show is BRILLIANT!

  2. Shameless: Bipolar Disorder, addiction, sexuality, the psychological impact of poverty.

  3. This is Us: Anxiety, depression, identity issues, sexuality, self esteem, family dynamics, PTSD.

  4. A Million Little Things: Grief, family dynamics, depression, suicide.

  5. Euphoria: Raw but real! Depression, addiction, gender identity, sexuality.

  6. Pose: Gender identity, sexuality, addiction, family dysfunction.

  7. Mr Robot: Depression, suicide, anxiety, Disassociative Identity Disorder, Psychosis

  8. Atypical: Autism spectrum, depression, family dynamics.

  9. Sex Education: HUMAN SEXUALITY! Also, identity and family dynamics.

  10. Steven Universe - Identity (gender and sexual), trauma, anxiety, depression, autism...EVERYTHING.

HONORABLE MENTIONS:

One Day at a Time, Crazy Ex-girlfriend, AJ and the Queen

Some of these shows you can watch with the entire family and engage in healthy discussions. If you lack awareness or education on any of these topics, this is a good place to start. However, nothing beats good ol’ fashioned research and talking to a professional.
